I have always been under the impression that any bathroom off a kitchen area had to have two doors... ie.. there must be at least two doors between a kitchen and a toilet. I am considering putting a toilet into my utility room, which has only one door leading into the kitchen. Does anyone have any knowledge here? The more i look at other peoples houses, the more i am NOT seeing this 2 door rule... am i imagining it?

Hi Kirsti,

The building regs did have this two door rule but in recent years it has changed. Check with your builder/architect to find out what the current regs are.

The two doors with a ventilated lobby is an old myth that started up in the 1960s.

The Approved Document to Part G (para 1.2) simply says "A space containing a closet should be separated by a door from a space used for the preparation of food (including a kitchen and any space in which washing up is done)."

You can find Approved Document G on our web site www.odpm.gov.uk under Building Regulations > Building Act > Approved Documents.
